How to decide what to eat when nobody will choose
Two people who both genuinely do not mind can spend forty minutes not eating.
Updated September 2026 · 5 min readWhy this particular decision is so hard
It is not that nobody has a preference. It is that the stakes are low enough that nobody wants to be the one who chose, in case it turns out badly. Choosing carries a small risk and no reward, so both people wait.
Everything below works by removing the person who chose. Once the decision belongs to a wheel, a rule or a rota, nobody is responsible for it.
Shortlist first, then randomise
The mistake is spinning a wheel loaded with every meal you can cook. That produces something nobody wants and the wheel loses its authority.
Instead, each person names two things they would be happy with. Put those four on the wheel and spin once. Every outcome is acceptable to somebody before you start, so the result is never a loss.
One veto each
The other person proposes, you may veto once, and then you have to accept the second proposal. Swap who proposes each night.
It moves fast because the proposer knows they only get two goes, so the first offer is a real one rather than a test.
Put it on a rota and stop deciding
The households that never have this argument are the ones where Tuesday is pasta. It sounds joyless and is not: it removes a daily negotiation and it makes the shopping trivial.
Six fixed slots and one free night a week is enough structure. Build it the same way as a chore rota, and rotate who picks the free night.
Start from the fridge, not from desire
Ask what needs using rather than what you fancy. It is a smaller question with fewer answers, and the answer is usually obvious within a minute.
This also solves the version of the problem where you order food while three vegetables quietly go off two metres away.
When it is a takeaway
The same trick works, with one change: shortlist the places, not the dishes. Nobody can compare a curry to a pizza, but everyone can pick between three restaurants.
If you order from the same four places, put them on the wheel once and keep it. The decision then takes four seconds and no discussion at all.
