Card games for two people that are actually good
Most card games are written for four and tolerate two. These are the ones that are better with two.
Updated September 2026 · 7 min readGin Rummy
The default two-player card game, and deservedly. Ten cards each, draw and discard, arrange your hand into sets and runs, and knock when your unmatched cards total ten or less.
What makes it good with two is that the discard pile is a conversation: every card you throw tells the other person something, and every card they take tells you more. Basic Rummy rules cover the shared foundation.
Cribbage
The best two-player game on this list if you are willing to spend an evening learning it. You score by making fifteens, pairs and runs, and you track it by moving pegs along a board.
The board is what makes it work: you can see the whole game at a glance, and a comeback is visible from across the room. Worth buying a board rather than keeping score on paper.
Șeptică
Romanian, fast, and almost unknown outside the region. Suits do not matter, only ranks, and sevens cut everything. Two players makes it a tight duel over the tens and aces.
The rules take a minute to learn and about three hands to actually understand. Full rules for Șeptică.
Război, or War
No decisions at all. Both players flip, higher card wins, ties go to war. It is on this list because sometimes the right game is one nobody has to think about, especially with a child or at the end of a long day.
Set a timer for fifteen minutes and count cards at the end, or it will not finish. Rules for Război.
Crazy Eights
Match the suit or the number, and eights are wild. With two players it becomes surprisingly tactical, because you can track roughly what they are holding and strand them on a suit.
Deal seven each rather than five with two players. Crazy Eights rules.
Speed
No turns. Both players play simultaneously onto two central piles, going one up or one down, as fast as you can. First to empty their hand wins.
It lasts ninety seconds and is genuinely exhausting. Best as a decider when a longer game has ended in a draw.
Blackjack
Works fine with two if you take turns being the dealer, one hand each. The dealer has no decisions, so alternate every hand and it stays even.
Play for matchsticks rather than money and it holds up as a filler. Blackjack rules, including what the dealer must do.
Go Fish
Written off as a children's game, and it is one, but with two players and both people paying attention it turns into a memory contest. Every question tells the other person exactly what you are holding.
Picking one
Ten minutes and no patience: Speed or War. An hour and a glass of something: Cribbage. Somewhere in between: Gin Rummy, every time. Want to play something the other person has never heard of: Șeptică.
